Cabbage shredder was brought by parents-in-law to Australia in the 1990s from Poland. It belonged to husband’s grandmother who used the cabbage shredder from the 1920s to the 1950s and later on used by the Laba family in Wollongong until the 2000s

Reminder of home in Poland when family was involved in the who process of preparation and making of sauerkraut and the smell and taste of dishes cooked from it. Additionally sauerkraut was made in autumn so sit could last throughout the cold Polish winter and was the main ingredient in a very popular dish ‘bigos’ (a hunter’s stew)
