The Quiet Benefactor – Celebration of a Local Migrant Identity
A short biography of the life and contributions to the Illawarra of Mr Italo Mazzola, an Italian migrant who came to call Wollongong his home.
Mr Mazzola throughout his life generously donated to charities and organisations not only in Wollongong but throughout Australia and overseas. One of his final acts was a significant bequest he made to Multicultural Aged Care Illawarra (MACI) in Warrawong which enabled the village to extend the residential accommodation and construct a new function centre which was named in his honour.
MACI engaged the Migration Heritage Project to create a memorial booklet about the life of Italo Mazzola that was presented to the guests at the official opening of the new wing and remains on site so that his kindness and generosity may be remembered as he was a person who went about donating without any fanfare – hence the title “The Quiet Benefactor”.
The Italo Wing, catering for people living with dementia, and the Function Centre was opened on 1 March 2019.
